He (or she) has popped the question and now you’re engaged! This is such an exciting time for you and your partner. Your friends and family will also be thrilled to be sharing in your celebration. But now the big question is how long you should wait to tie the knot.
How long you are engaged will depend on your personal circumstances, family dynamics, community expectations and every couple has a unique set of variables to contemplate. This is the perfect time to anticipate your married life together and think about what you want to achieve as a couple in the short and medium term.
It’s undeniable that finances will play an enormous factor in determining the length of your engagement. Whether you have significant family support, or are doing it all yourselves, it will take time to save, not to mention having time to find the perfect time, location and suppliers to create your dream day.
In the US the average time couples are engaged is from one year to 18 months. This makes sense when thinking about booking your wedding vendors and suppliers. If you want to have your first choice of date at your venue you should expect to book at least 12-15 months in advance, perhaps more for popular venues and “marquee” dates.
Your life situation will have a large impact. Do you want to finish university first? Your work situation may involve travel, or fixed length contracts, or you simply might want have a bigger nest egg should unexpected expenses be incurred along the journey to the altar. There is nothing wrong with taking your time.
On the other hand some of these elements may also force you to move a little faster. You may also decide to speed up the process if a loved one is ill, a close friend has plans to move away or you can get a short-notice cancellation at your dream venue.
With all of your wedding decisions the most important thing is that you are both happy with your decision. The length of time you remain engaged is your choice, and we suggest you make the most of this time. Of course if you do get sick of waiting there is always the option to elope!
